MCPs & MCP detectors

For TOF measurement, Electron Microscopy, Particle Imaging, and Surface Analysis. Available as a device that can be freely positioned by the user within the vacuum apparatus or as an assembly combined with a high vacuum flange or high vacuum viewport. Of course, we also offer bare MCPs for replacement of worn-out or damaged MCPs.

MCP structure

A micro channel plate (MCP) is a lead glass plate including an array of electron multipliers with diameter of the tube in the range of 4-50 µm in parallel with thousands of other tubes. The length of a multiplier tube corresponds to the thickness of the glass plate. The aspect ratio of the MCP is the length/diameter ratio of the channels. The channel axes are biased by a small angle (6° to 12°) to optimize the secondary electron emission in the channels. Upon application of high voltage the electrons are accelerated in the channels and hit the wall. At every hit each single electron is multiplied by a factor of 3-5. An MCP with an aspect ratio of 40:1 typically amplifies the electrons by a factor of more than 10000. So a single channel can be understood as a dynode continuous structure of a photomultiplier tube.

GIDS GmbH offers MCPs for various applications in image and detection mode. It is possible to image electrons, positrons, protons, heavy ions, x-rays, XUV, VUV- and UV-radiation and measure position, cluster parameters, TOF and Ion- contribution depending on customers HV and readout system used.

MCP detector types

Several MCP detector types are available based on the MCP types which we offer. The MCP detectors can be assembled as single, double and triple MCP setup with the metal anode or phosphor screen. The pure detector unit can be freely mounted inside your vacuum system. Alternatively, it is offered as an assembly combined with a CF high vacuum flange or viewport.

Counting detector on the flange

GIDS GmbH offers open MCP detectors with metal anode for different applications in counting mode. It is possible to count electrons, positrons, protons, heavy ions, x-rays, VUV- and UV-radiation and measure the TOF parameters. Due to the assembly in UHV flanges (CF-flange) it is possible to integrate the system in any analytic instrument which is based on the CF standard. On request, it is also possible to integrate the systems on other flange standards such as ISO-K, ASA or custom specific ones. The flanges are equipped with 3 integrated vacuum SHV feed-throughs to supply the high voltage to the MCP detector.

Imaging detector on viewport flange

GIDS GmbH offers open MCP detectors with phosphor screen for different applications in image mode. It is possible to image electrons, positrons, protons, heavy ions, x-rays, VUV- and UV-radiation and measure position and cluster parameters depending on the readout system used. Additional thread holes could be integrated from the non-vacuum side to allow the mounting of a camera or another readout system. Due to the assembly in UHV flange (CF-viewport) it is possible to integrate the system in analytic instruments which are based on the CF standard. On request, it is also possible to mount the MCP assembly on other viewport standards like ISO-K, ASA or custom specific ones. The viewports are equipped with 3 integrated vacuum SHV feed-throughs to supply the high voltage to the MCP detector.

The MCP detectors are available in two configurations: a narrow design with a minimized diameter (drawing) and a wide design (drawing). The latter one optionally with solid ceramic mounting plate.
